Making the Most of a Small Prepaid Data Pack

A pack at this price is easy to finish quickly if you do not keep an eye on it. These are the habits that have helped me stretch a limited allowance, along with a few things I checked about du’s prepaid offers.

What du Says About Its Easy Plans

In a Bayut guide to du prepaid plans, the Easy 25 and Easy 45 pay-as-you-go plans each come with a SIM and matching preloaded credit. The same guide says recharging AED 25 or more gives four weeks of free calls to a favourite du number, and AED 30 or more gives 1 GB free. It also mentions a 1 GB bonus valid for 3 days when you download the du app on Easy plans. Offers like these change often, so check the current terms on du’s website before you recharge.

Stretching 400 MB

• Turn off automatic app updates on mobile data and update over Wi-Fi.
• Switch off background data for video apps and set video quality to low.
• Turn on data saver mode on your phone to limit apps that run in the background.
• Download maps and playlists on Wi-Fi so you are not streaming on the go.
• In WhatsApp, turn off automatic media download on mobile data.

Check Before You Buy

Before you subscribe, confirm three things in the du app or on the website: the price including VAT, how long the pack is valid, and whether the social allowance applies to the apps you use. If an allowance is split between general and social use, running out of one does not give you more of the other. Also confirm whether the pack renews automatically, and how to stop that if you only want it once.

When a Different Plan Makes Sense

If you regularly use up a small pack before the month ends, a larger plan may cost less per gigabyte. The Bayut guide mentions Flexi plans where you choose your own data and minutes, with monthly and yearly pricing. Compare what you pay for top-ups in a typical month with the price of a larger plan, and use the du app or customer care to see the options for your number.

Finally, keep a note of the date you activated any pack. Because validity is counted from activation, it is easy to forget when it ends, and checking the remaining allowance in the du app once a week helps you avoid being surprised by the end of the month or a lapsed pack.
